HISTORICAL IMPORTANCE OF TRABZON

The history of Trabzon is rich and diverse. It is believed that the initial settlers were from the Caucasus and Anatolia. The presence of the Hittites in the region around the 14th century BC is known. The Greeks established the city, which they named Trapezous, in 756 BC. During the Roman Empire, the city gained its independence and became one of the important ports of the Black Sea. It was invaded by the Goths and Persians but was reconstructed by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I. The city was later captured by the Seljuk Turks and eventually became the seat of the Empire of Trebizond under Alexios Komnenos. Trabzon, conquered by Mehmed the Conqueror in 1461, faced a Russian attack during World War I and remained under siege until 1918.
