HISTORICAL IMPORTANCE OF İSTANBUL

Istanbul is believed to have been initially founded by the Greeks a long time ago. Later on, the Roman Empire embraced Istanbul as the capital and established its presence in the city. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire maintained the city as its capital. The fundamental reason for this decision was that Constantinople, as it was known at that time, held a unique status compared to other cities of the period. Additionally, Istanbul was crucial as a trade center and had the potential to facilitate easy passage between Europe and Asia. Hence, people began referring to Constantinople simply as ‘the city’ because everyone would understand which city was being talked about. Travelers, when asked where they were headed, would simply say ‘to the city’ or’stanpolis.’ Over time, this term evolved into Istanbul. Throughout history, Istanbul has always been significant for empires worldwide due to its strategic location. Many empires sought to conquer Istanbul. Even after the fall of the Ottoman Empire and the establishment of the Republic of Turkey, other countries continued to focus their attention on the city. During World War I, the British attempted to reach Istanbul by attacking the Dardanelles, but they were unsuccessful. Due to the threat during the war, the capital was moved to Ankara to be protected until the last moment. The fame and popularity of Istanbul led to the construction of captivating buildings by different empires. During the Byzantine Empire, Istanbul, known as the center of Christianity, was adorned with magnificent churches such as Hagia Sophia. Similarly, during the Ottoman Empire, the city became the center of Islam with the construction of numerous mosques.
